Paterson to Honor Black Heritage with Annual Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony
City celebrates rich African American history.
Paterson, NJ—Sunday, February 1, 2026, Mayor Andre Sayegh and the Paterson City Council will proudly host the annual Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony to kick off Black History Month 2026. This meaningful event honors the contributions of the African American community to Paterson and beyond, highlighting the city’s ongoing commitment to diversity, unity, and the recognition of history.
Paterson is home to Hinchliffe Stadium, one of the first historic sites on New Jersey’s Black Heritage Trail. Built in 1932, it is one of only two remaining Negro League stadiums in the United States and a designated National Historic Landmark.
The city also preserves the Huntoon and Van Rensalier Underground Railroad Historic Site, which played a crucial role in the journey to freedom for enslaved African Americans. Together, these landmarks reflect Paterson’s deep-rooted connection to Black history and its dedication to honoring and preserving this rich legacy.
