“As an increasing number of deficits and disabilities are attributed to deficiencies in executive function, the empty and self-referential quality of the concept becomes harder to ignore. Executive function refers to a capacity for rule following that is detached from meaning. Rules become ends in themselves while the reality they imperfectly represent is forgotten. Executive function is restrictive rather than adaptive and more reflective of the capacity to conform than the capacity for higher order thinking.”
