Hugelkultur for Landscaping ~ Four Year Update & Tree Planting - Landscaper Know How ~ Welcome to The Hugelkultur at The Garden of Castle Rock a Minnesota Wedding and Event Center. At the heart of the Woodland Restoration Garden is what many would call a berm, it’s not. It is a mound culture system called a hugelkulter, some call them hugel mounds. It is not what most think of as a raised garden bed, but it is. Piled up logs, branches and twigs mixed with high organic matter create a favorable environment for the decay of the wood and the break down of organic matter creating perfect soil regeneration. A fancy composting system. The hügelkultur will retain moisture and provide nutrients to the native woodland plantings. The Part 1 Video shows the creation of the hugelkulture from the very beginning. Part 2 is where we cover the organic matter with soil and grade for landscaping. We also place several tree stumps and a big dead tree! Finally, we cover it all with a thick layer of leaves. As the hugelkulture continues to mature we continue to work on it. The weed seed bank was very high in the compost we used to create it. We have pulled a lot of weeds and left them on top to return to the soil. More ferns and woodland plants have been added. In this video we add some larger trees to the hugelkulture. Sugar maples and red oak are native to this area in Minnesota. The garden is really starting to take on a natural, native feel. It won’t be long before any will recognize that it was all designed and installed! Make sure you subscribe to the channel and leave us a comment! We most certainly would appreciate it if you did! Thank you for watching… Enjoy! ~ Glenn at The Gardens
