In this episode, I wake up on BLM land perched high on the mesa just a few miles outside the entrance to Canyonlands National Park—already surrounded by awesome desert views before the day even begins.

I spend the morning exploring the Island in the Sky district of the national park by taking the scenic drive and stopping at some of the park’s most iconic overlooks.

After taking in the scenery, I roll back into Moab for a van-life reset—hot shower, gym session, groceries, and laundry—before heading south toward the quieter and more remote The Needles District. 

The next morning, I take on the legendary Chesler Park hike, a loop through towering sandstone spires, narrow joints, and open grasslands surrounded by some of the most unique geology in the Southwest. This area gets its name from the colorful rock “needles” formed by Cedar Mesa Sandstone, and it feels completely different from Island in the Sky—more immersive, more rugged, and far fewer crowds.

Canyonlands surprised me in the best way possible. The scale, the solitude, and the variety between districts easily make this my new favorite national park.
