Durning the filming of Chasing Niagara my personal favorite experience was getting to explore and run the Santo Domingo River in Southern Mexico.
This video breaks down our scouting/preparation run and then our filming day where we completed a fun descent of the main waterfall canyon on the Santo Domingo. As always it was a huge team effort to pull this one off, thanks to everyone who was there and supported the dream!
This river had been run a few times prior to this trip and only once since this film...For good reason, it's in the middle of nowhere on the border of Guatemala and Mexico and is one of the steepest river canyons in the world. The other unique aspect of the Santo is the geology. These waterfalls are made of travertine rock which means two things: One the water is a majestic blue color due to a mineral found in travertine, and two, it's an extremely sticky and abrasive style of bedrock. (Which makes running these big waterfalls even more difficult). For the whole story and way better footage check out the movie "Chasing Niagara" and Riverroots.com - ENJOY!
