Pre-cancer or cancer treatment, pelvic organ prolapse and other benign conditions are the main reasons for a hysterectomy, a surgery to remove all or part of the womb. While there is no registry collating the total number of hysterectomies performed in Singapore, it is one of the most common surgical procedures in gynaecological care. KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) performs about 1,000 procedures each year. CNA spoke to Professor Tan Hak Koon, Chairman of the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at KKH, and Dr Kazila Bhutia, Consultant from the Department of Urogynaecology at KKH.
