In this video, I explain how Lantern Harpooning works in Old School RuneScape and why it’s a great AFK fishing method.
Requirements include 52 Fishing, 47 Sailing, a harpoon, boat, and a lit lantern. The best lanterns are the Bug Lantern or Abyssal Lantern since they can be equipped and save inventory space (Bug Lantern requires 33 Slayer).
You can catch Swordtip Squid (52 Fishing) and Jumbo Squid (69 Fishing) from the same fishing spots, earning around 20–30k Fishing XP/hr and 250–400 squid/hr. Rada’s Blessing and the Angler outfit work here, but the Fish Barrel does not.
Swordtip Squid are worth 700–1k GP, while Jumbo Squid sell for 3–3.5k GP. Squid can be cut with a knife for stackable offcuts (AFK-friendly) with a chance at the Squid Beak (≈ 1.2m GP, 1/1k Swordtip, 1/512 Jumbo), or turned into squid paste with a pestle and mortar. You can also bank squid using island bank chests (requires 70 Construction to build).
Lantern harpooning is available on 4 islands, with Sailing requirements starting at 47 (Onyx Crest) up to 76 Sailing (Buccaneer’s Haven).
