Countries facing water scarcity employ a variety of strategies to survive and adapt in the face of dwindling water resources. The core approaches fall into three broad categories: improving supply, managing demand, and building resilience. On the supply side, many nations invest in expanding access to alternative water sources. Desalination, the process of removing salt from seawater, has become essential for water-scarce countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, and parts of the United States. Treating and recycling wastewater is another increasingly popular option, allowing water to be used multiple times for agriculture or even for potable use, especially in urban centers. Additionally, rainwater harvesting, collecting and storing rain from rooftops and other surfaces, provides a decentralized, low-tech way to supplement traditional supplies, often used in rural communities and arid regions. Groundwater extraction also plays a crucial role, particularly in places where surface water is unreliable. However, over-extraction can lead to long-term depletion and environmental degradation, making sustainable management critical. Protection and restoration of wetlands is now recognized as another vital supply-side measure: wetlands naturally filter and store water, supporting both people and ecosystems. Demand management is equally important. Countries encourage households, industries, and farmers to use water more efficiently through conservation campaigns, installation of water-saving technologies, leak detection, and repair. Economic incentives, like increasing water pricing in line with usage, help curb waste and promote investment in efficiency. Regulatory standards, such as requirements for industrial recycling or efficient irrigation, further reduce unnecessary water loss.
