Church of Jesus Christ Statement on Charlie Kirk Tragedy (LDS, Mormon)

Описание: When Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints swiftly made a statement condemning the violence.

Why did the Church comment on this political tragedy when they’ve stayed silent on so many others? Is this politics, or something deeper?

I went through every official Church statement from the past 5 years—and the pattern I discovered was revealing.

Since most of the Church Newsroom is about church announcements, it is rare for the Church to make official statements on political issues or public tragedies, even more so when you consider that most of the tragedy statements are coming from local authorities, not the global Church headquarters.

From what I could tell, out of the hundreds of articles, Church headquarters has made only about a dozen statements on politics or tragedies in the last 5 years.

Things like the church’s position on immigration, abortion, neutrality or the death of a missionary in the field.

In other words, things that are directly relevant to the Church.

And I think in this case, it’s demonstrable that this particular tragedy has a greater connection to the Church.

This highly-publicized crime was committed in the Church’s backyard of Utah, and leaders are likely concerned for the high concentration of church members in the state that were affected by yesterday’s events.

The Church is part of this national story, whether they wanted to be or not, so it makes perfect sense for them to unequivocally communicate that murder does not represent the values of the Church of Jesus Christ, no matter who the victim or perpetrator is.

No, this is not an instance of partisan favoritism, this is messaging the Church’s position on an event that has direct bearing on the Church

And this statement is instructing members on what to do next in this highly charged environment: love your neighbor.
