Many believe that Salem Chapel, in St. Catharines, Ontario is the oldest Black church in Ontario. It was built in 1855, but its congregation dates back to 1814. Its most famous member? Harriet Tubman, who lived in the area in the mid-19th century. From here, the Underground Railroad conductor organized rescue missions. And many of those she rescued ended up settling here, becoming church members. Our guide for today’s field trip is a descendant of such freedom seekers: Rochelle Bush, resident historian and proprietor and primary guide of Tubman Tours Canada.
