Описание: 2025 Restored Version - An Interactive EDU Program Release - A Jacobean Tragedy by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley

The Play
Licensed in 1622 and first published in 1653, The Changeling stands as a monumental work of the English Renaissance, frequently cited as the greatest tragedy of the period outside the Shakespearean canon. It presents a harrowing study in moral corruption, detailing the repulsive pact and ensuing psychological disintegration between the noblewoman Beatrice-Joanna and her servant, De Flores. The play is renowned for its unflinching examination of obsessive desire and sin—described by T.S. Eliot as "the changeling of the passions," cementing its reputation as a crucial dramatic text.

The Author
Thomas Middleton (baptised 18 April 1580 – July 1627; also spelt Midleton) was a preeminent English Jacobean playwright and poet. Standing alongside William Shakespeare, John Fletcher, and Ben Jonson, he was among the most successful and prolific playwrights at work in the Jacobean period, and one of the few to achieve equal mastery in the disparate genres of city comedy and tragedy. He was also a prolific writer of court masques and civic pageants.

Textual Scholarship
Current academic consensus, notably evidenced in The Oxford Middleton and its companion piece, Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture, confirms Middleton’s key role in the canon:

Collaboration as Standard Practice: The dual authorship of The Changeling with William Rowley exemplifies the extended and ordinary collaborative practices of the Early Modern theatrical period. Scholarship confirms Rowley's primary contribution was typically confined to the secondary or comic subplot (the madhouse scenes), while Middleton concentrated on the main, complex tragic plot.

Collaboration with Shakespeare: Modern scholarly consensus, based on almost irrefutable documented and stylistic patterns, confirms Middleton's collaboration with Shakespeare on Timon of Athens. He is also credited with later adaptation and revision of Macbeth and Measure for Measure.

Debated Works: Arguments also exist for his collaboration on All's Well That Ends Well, though this remains contested by some scholars.
