The Author
Thomas Middleton (baptised 18 April 1580 – July 1627; also spelt Midleton) was a preeminent English Jacobean playwright and poet. Standing alongside William Shakespeare, John Fletcher, and Ben Jonson, he was among the most successful and prolific playwrights at work in the Jacobean period, and one of the few to achieve equal mastery in the disparate genres of city comedy and tragedy. He was also a prolific writer of court masques and civic pageants.

Scholarship confirms Rowley's primary contribution was typically confined to the secondary or comic subplot (the madhouse scenes), while Middleton concentrated on the main, complex tragic plot.

Collaboration with Shakespeare: Modern scholarly consensus, based on almost irrefutable documented and stylistic patterns, confirms Middleton's collaboration with Shakespeare on Timon of Athens. He is also credited with later adaptation and revision of Macbeth and Measure for Measure.
