With the obvious rise in work from home jobs and overall sentiment towards the growing sense of indefinite remote work, its useful to look at why tech hubs like silicon valley, San Francisco, Seattle and others grew to be the places of innovation we know today. For many computer science majors out there, working at a faang company (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) sounds like a dream come true. Under normal (safe) circumstances, most computer science students and new software engineers would move to silicon valley (or other tech hub) in order to start work. But work from home essentially allows employees to work from wherever home is.
Before the recent growth in remote work, the desire to move to tech cities was rooted in the necessity to commute to work. For example if you were hired by a faang company in silicon valley or Seattle, you'd likely have to move in order to be able to start work. Work from home has been changing that for many software engineers. Yet, commuting distance sometimes isn't the only factor when considering moving to a tech city like silicon valley. People generally like to be around others that share similar interests and aspirations. If you are a software engineer at a faang company (or other tech company) with interests in software engineering, tech and computer science you'd likely want to be in an area where people have similar jobs and interests. Thus silicon valley, San Francisco, and Seattle would be prime locations because of their abundantly large tech spheres of influence.
I recently graduated from ucsd with a degree in mathematics-computer science and I was extremely fortunate enough to receive a job offer last October to become a full time software engineer in Seattle (now a program manager). I was excited to move to Seattle, not only because of the distance to the tech campus (when it is safe to commute again), but also to get a change of scenery. I am beyond excited to be surrounded by talented engineers and innovators at companies like Amazon and Microsoft. I also really need to start finding the best coffee locations in Seattle!
Comment down below your thoughts on how remote work will affect the decentralization of faang and other tech companies in tech cities like silicon valley!
