A platoon was trapped. A sniper owned the square. Air support denied. Tanks unavailable. Artillery blind.
And then a weapon designed to shoot down aircraft turned an apartment building into rubble.
In November 1944, in a shattered French town, the M15 Combination Gun Motor Carriage — dismissed as useless for frontline combat — rewrote the rules of urban warfare. Armed with a 37mm autocannon and twin .50 caliber machine guns, it wasn’t meant for street fighting.
But when infantry were pinned in a doorway with no way out, one crew ignored regulations… and drove straight into the kill zone.
What followed became known as the “Can Opener” technique — a brutal lesson in battlefield adaptation.
In This Video:

Why commanders banned it from urban combat
How one decision reshaped ground support doctrine
The battlefield innovation that manuals never predicted
War doesn’t reward rigid thinking.
It rewards the men who adapt.
