How to identify and treat for powdery mildew
Many squash and pumpkin cultivars have a natural silvery variegation on their leaves which many mistake for powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that spreads on wet leaf surfaces. Spores float in the air and spread to other plants. If you shake the leaves you may notice some spores release and float into the air. Powdery mildew looks like a powdery coating on the leaves.
There are many treatments for powdery mildew which include sprays made by mixing milk or baking soda with water. My favorite treatment though, is 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water.
