The "four-finger formation," also known as "finger-four," is a military aircraft formation where four aircraft are spaced like fingertips on an outstretched hand. It's a flexible and adaptable formation that was popular in World War II, particularly for fighter aircraft. The outer aircraft in formation is in the defence mode and can often break leaving a "Vic" formation. This was very effective and can be traced back to the 1930s.
The Four Finger formation allows for good situational awareness, as each pilot has a clear view of the other aircraft in the formation due to their spacing. It also enables each aircraft to easily split into pairs for individual engagements or to protect each other if attacked or as mentioned use the outer no.4 aircraft to defend
