Karen (Beyers) Fitzpatrick grew up on a produce farm near Winona and graduated from the College of St. Teresa with majors in English and history. Her master's degree is in religious education from Loyola University. Karen entered the Rochester Franciscans, taught junior high and became a parish educator. After leaving the Franciscans, she married Jim Fitzpatrick. They live in Mahtomedi. Jim and Karen are active volunteers in response to hunger and homelessness. Karen has served on the national board of Bread for the World, serves on the NE Metro MICAH Committee and helped initiate a shelter for homeless families in Oakdale.
Karen will discuss how Mahtomedi would benefit from developing more affordable rental housing to allow young families of lower and moderate income to live among us, generating many more young students into our school system and making us a more inclusive community.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
