Here’s the totally gay medieval music video you didn’t know you needed today! Happy LGBT+ history month!
I filmed this in a medieval church hidden in a remote valley near the Welsh border, a rare gem featuring incredible thirteenth-century wall paintings.
There are many refined and sumptuous recordings of this song, all of them beautiful. I consider this to be the queer peasant’s version!
‘Quant la Doulce Jouvencelle’ is a beautiful 15th century love song by an Anonymous composer, for 3 parts/ voices. It was collected in a manuscript of Italian origin, now named ‘MS. Canon. Misc. 213’ and housed at the Bodleian library, Oxford.
Here I’m playing it on my gittern (medieval guitar), in an edition by Arngeir Hauksson (the drums are my addition).
In this video you may notice my ongoing obsession with men in tights in Renaissance paintings! As a genderqueer bisexual, I can get very confused.
But seriously- by today’s standards, the men might be considered effeminate or camp and this fascinates me. Ideas of ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ get disrupted. I believe it shows how arbitrary gender is in fashion!
For me it’s a gateway to imagining a world without strict gender binaries, and part of my ongoing quest to imagine hidden LGBTIQA histories that have been lost to time.
Thank you for watching!
