IRP Miata Shifter Install

Our thoughts on the shifter?

1. It is exquisite! Right out of the box it is an eye-catcher. Too bad you'll only see the top 1/4 of it though once it's installed.

2. The installation of the shifter was straight-forward enough, not unlike a stock shifter. The biggest hitch was the front right bolt because you cannot get a full turn with the wrench to tighten it. This will take a while as you can only get little bites at a time. Perhaps removing the radio surround trim would give you more room for the wrench.

3. The rubber "boot" could be done much better. There really needs to be a metal surround to seal it to the trans tunnel. We highlight this "flapping" in the video.

4. The throw is super short and tight! Our crude measurement graph shows the distance the shift knob travels during the throw of both the stock vs. the IRP. You can see plainly the IRP throw is about half the distance of the stock throw, so this means consider moving your stock shifter about half as far as you do now with the IRP.

5. The fixed knob and the length of the handle is really just right for ergonomics. It is really a racecar part, so consider where a racecar driver would want their shifter and that's where it is with the IRP.
