UCAS Report Surge In University Applications

19,000 more students have applied to study at UK universities this year compared to 2012, according to the Universities & Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS)
Applications to study in the 2013/14 academic year totalled at 637,456, compared with 618,250 last year, a 3.1% year-on-year increase, despite the rise in tuition fees.
The 2013 total included 5,000 more 18 year olds, determining that 35.5% of 18 year olds now apply to university; an impressive result considering the 18 year old population is some 60,000 smaller than it was in 2009.
The largest surge in applications came from overseas students, with a rise of 6%, while there was an overall increase in application of 2.7% from the UK; 3% from England; 6% from Northern Ireland; 1% from Scotland and 4.3% from EU countries.
One in 10 applicants now live outside the UK, attracted to study in the UK because of the prestige of a British education -- with five of the top twenty universities in the world based in the UK, and tuition fees which remain lower than those in Australia and the US. The EU supplied 43,000 applicants, while 65,000 applicants came from the rest of the world.
