Let’s make a “Yes, Chef” kitchen towel you’ll actually want to show off! In this cozy craft session, I combine two techniques on one sublimation dish towel: permanent silkscreen ink for that crisp, professional look plus heat transfer iron-ons to add a pretty border. It’s beginner-friendly, fast, and perfect for holiday, hostess, or housewarming gifts.
What you’ll learn
How to prep and align designs on a tea towel
The difference between inking and heat transfer (and how to mix both)
Heat press settings that work: 360°F for 60 seconds with even pressure
When to use parchment paper and an ink mat (save your surfaces!)
Easy peel-and-reveal tips for sharp results
How to trim and layer iron-on borders for a custom look
Project overview
Base: Sublimation dish towel (poly-heavy towels take both ink and transfers beautifully)
Design: “Yes, Chef” + a decorative border
Technique: Silkscreen ink first, then iron-on heat transfer
Finish: Smooth, gift-ready towel with clean lines and durable detail
Quick step-by-step
1) Prep towel: Light pre-press to remove wrinkles. An ink mat under your towel prevents bleed-through.
2) Silkscreen ink: Position your stencil, apply permanent fabric ink (I used a cadet blue), and do a careful peel-and-reveal.
3) Dry/heat set ink: Allow ink to dry fully and heat set per your brand’s instructions (parchment on top protects your press and towel).
4) Add iron-on border: Trim any white edges, use placement tape, and press at 360°F for 60 seconds with even pressure. Always cover with parchment.
5) Repeat on the other edge (or mix and match borders) and admire that crisp, professional finish!
Pro tips
Always cover iron-ons with parchment paper to protect both your press and design.
Check your towel’s hem—it can be sewn a little crooked; align to your design, not the hem.
Work in sections for long borders so you can keep everything straight.
Heat transfer sheets are typically single-use; save trimmed pieces for small accents.
Let ink dry completely before pressing over it with heat transfers.
Great for
Budget-friendly gifts, stocking stuffers, hostess gifts
Custom kitchen sets, bridal shower presents, and chef-inspired decor
Craft nights and last-minute gifting
Supplies I used
Sublimation dish towel
Silkscreen stencil (Yes, Chef)
Permanent fabric ink (cadet blue)
Ink mat
Heat press (set to 360°F for 60 seconds for iron-ons)

Notes
Always follow your specific ink and transfer manufacturer’s directions.
If you’re layering ink and heat transfers, ensure your ink is fully dry and heat set before pressing over it.
