According to Sehn, the dependence on database administrators has reduced efficiency at many software companies. These traditional DBA teams spend countless hours creating slow, inefficient processes to back up and restore databases.

In the early 2000s, when Amazon was about 400 people, in order to run a database, you had to go to the centralized team of DBAs. There were probably 5 to 10 of them at the time, and if you needed to ask them to deploy an Oracle instance, your wait time may be put up 18 months."

For companies looking to scale, this type of solution wouldn't cut it.

Amazon's fast growth demanded a scalable solution. Software teams and DBAs often ended up overworked, trying to keep up with the number of deployments necessary to allow for the kind of growth Amazon.com was experiencing.

This isn't an issue for companies like Amazon alone. Any organization that depends on database systems can fall victim to slow, inefficient processes. Plus, human error in the development, deployment, and maintenance of databases can cause major vulnerabilities.

To help meet the needs of Amazon, Sehn began to use MySQL, an open-source SQL database, which allowed him to quickly add new servers into the system.

"I compiled it for Amazon - I built MySQL for Amazon's OSs. I made a deployment framework for their internal deployment system called Apollo. I was one of the first to deploy a production instance in Amazon."

By the time Sehn left Amazon in 2013, there had been over 12,000 deployments of the new open-source system - a monumental task that helped Amazon scale into the global operation it is today.
