Political groups in the European Parliament

The European Parliament has 720 Members from 27 countries and from more than 200 political parties across the EU.      

That’s a lot of different opinions! So how do MEPs reach agreements and make sure your voices are heard?

At the European elections, voters cast their ballot for national lists and parties in their country. The elected members in the European Parliament then build larger alliances with like-minded counterparts from across the EU - these are Parliament’s political groups.  

To form a group, a minimum of 23 MEPs from at least 7 EU member states need to come together.

Groups are at the heart of Parliament’s political work - they help set its agenda and ensure all opinions are represented in the debate. They allow MEPs to work together on issues that affect all Europeans, like climate change, jobs and the EU’s role in the world.
