Not so long ago fresh fish was a luxury item enjoyed by the wealthy few who
could afford to spend time at the seaside or pay to have fish delivered to them. Now, fish can be found everywhere at any price thanks to the Trawler. Trawlers are fishing boats designed to drag a funnel-shaped net called a trawl behind them – they scoop up ground fish that we know as cod, haddock, sole and hake. Trawling has been around since the middle ages – but it didnʼt take off as a method of fishing until the mid-19th c. when ground transportation was able to take fresh fish inland fast enough that it wouldnʼt spoil. Trawlers come in many sizes from the small inshore fishing boat to the giant Factory Trawler where fish is processed onboard. Weʼll learn to haul in the nets along with the seasoned Trawlermen of the East Coast.
