Measuring the compression strength and structural integrity of a soda can is a critical quality control measure for soda bottlers. Here a Galdabini Universal Testing Machine is used to do a basic comparison of compression strength.
The machine's crosshead moves down at a fixed rate of speed. Spherically Seated Compression Platens are attached to the test machine to compress the samples. A load cell is used to measure the force exerted onto the soda can. The machine is programmed to notice a 10% drop in force and end the test. It then returns to its home position automatically.
The Coke can broke at roughly 640 Newtons or around 110 lbs.
The Pepsi can failed earlier at around 400 Newtons or around 80 lb.
