We looked at how optical and magnetic incremental encoders are used to measure the distance moved by our Raspberry Pi Robot. The motors are controlled by a Feather motor controller board. We used an oscilloscope to test these encoders. They use infrared sensors and Hall Effect sensors to monitor state changes on the encoder wheels. We used CircuitPython to control the robot's motors.
