On July 4, 1946, more than one hundred thousand people witnessed an unprecedented public ex3cution in Gdansk. Eleven former officials of the Stutthof concentration camp were hanged on a hill in front of the crowd. The Polish authorities sought something more than justice: they wanted to show the world that impunity had ended.
Five women and six men, all linked to the Nazi extermination apparatus, were condemned after a brief but devastating trial. They had been guards, doctors, surveillance chiefs. The sentence was clear: war crimes, systematic murders, torture. The executions were not private nor quick. They became a collective spectacle, charged with tension, revenge and symbolism.
Why was it chosen to do it in front of tens of thousands of witnesses? What role did the executed women play in the Nazi machinery? And why were not all judged in the same way?
