Welcome to my perennial flower garden! The flower "jungle" at my home in the Cotswolds is an informal style of garden, but it has compelling advantages since it is lower maintenance, uses less water, and provides more wildlife benefits than most flower gardens based on annual bedding plants. The main care this plant community needs is cutting back of dead plant material at the end of each season, occasional sprinkler watering during times of intense drought, and a dash of natural fertiliser like pelleted chicken manure / blood fish & bone meal in the early spring.
The term "perennial" refers to plants that live for more than one year. Most of the flower bed plants have underground structures like bulbs or rhizomes that stay dormant during winter and regrow above ground structures during the growing season. That's why the flower bed looks bare during the winter - the plants are still alive but they're "sleeping" underground!
Some of the plants featured in this video include: Shasta Daisy (Leucantheum x superbum), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia and L. latifolia), Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis), Japanese Anemone (Anemone hupehensis), Purple Asters (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), Garden Tulips (Tulipa gesneriana), and Common Primrose (Primula vulgaris).
