Carpenter bees will damage homes and decks this year, causing millions of dollars in damage. The real problem, though, is damage caused by woodpeckers searching for the carpenter bee larva in the wood. Carpenter bees look like common bumblebees; however, only the females can sting, and only when aggressively disturbed.
The carpenter bee female lays eggs in 3/8-to-1/2-inch tunnels that may be 10 to 12 inches long. The larva will hatch and generally stay in the same area, creating more nests, and the results can be pretty destructive over the years. The real damage comes when the woodpeckers come looking for lunch. Effective treatments are relatively inexpensive, and your local exterminator should be able to eradicate these pests.
