Plot Synopsis - IO: is a 2019 American science fiction film directed by Jonathan Helpert. It stars Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie and Danny Huston.

It was released on January 18, 2019, by Netflix.

The film is set in a dystopian future, where Earth's atmosphere has become toxic. Most humans fled the planet to live on a space station near Io, a moon of Jupiter. Sam Walden is one of the few left. She lives at high altitude, where the air is still breathable.

One day, a man, Micah, reaches her home, travelling by balloon. He aims to reach a launch site to leave earth but first wants to speak with Dr. Henry Walden, Sam's father, who urged mankind to stay because he still saw hope. Sam reveals that her father is dead. Hearing this, Micah is determined to take Sam with him to the space shuttle, to which she agrees. While preparing and waiting for the right wind, they grow closer. They also discover that a new queen bee hatched in Sam's hive, which is immune to the toxic air.

When they hear that the shuttle launch is rescheduled to another site, further away than the original one, they drive into a toxic city to get the helium needed for the journey. After finding the helium and before starting, Sam goes to an art museum. When she runs out of oxygen, instead of switching to a new tank, she pulls off her mask and breathes the toxic air, hoping to survive. The air proves to be breathable, the Earth's atmosphere having healed itself in the time since humanity left. The film ends with images of her and a child on a beach, and with a voice-over of her telling Micah how beautiful the Earth is and that "they" are waiting for him.
