Scavell took on five apprentices, training them in the ways of magic and combat, testing them to see which one might be worthy of becoming the next Guardian. Four of these apprentices were male, and they all seemed like reasonable candidates. But the fifth apprentice was different. The fifth apprentice was a woman named Aegwynn, and from the very beginning, she faced discrimination and doubt. The male apprentices mocked her relentlessly, claimed that women couldn't become great wizards. This was a common prejudice at the time, a belief that powerful magic was somehow unsuited to women, that the raw arcane forces required a masculine temperament to control properly.
The taunts were constant and cruel. Her fellow apprentices would deliberately sabotage her work, hide her spell components, make her the target of pranks designed to humiliate her in front of Scavell and the other council members. They whispered that she had only been accepted as an apprentice because the council pitied her, or worse, because she had used feminine wiles to manipulate her way into consideration. Some suggested that she should give up trying to be a wizard and instead pursue more suitable occupations for women, like healing or divination, areas of magic they considered less demanding and more appropriate for her gender.
