Ottawa has five major federal measures that Canadian seniors need to understand in 2026 — but they are NOT all the same.
One proposal could bring a 10% OAS increase to seniors aged 65–74 and increase the GIS employment-income exemption from $5,000 to $6,500. But this proposal has not become law yet.
At the same time, other measures are already in effect, including the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and new affordability-related tax measures. Other proposals focus on survivor pensions and disability-related benefits.
In this video, we break down:
✅ Bill C-261 and the proposed 10% OAS increase
✅ Proposed GIS earnings-exemption changes
✅ Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit
✅ Bill C-4 affordability and tax changes
✅ Bill C-256 survivor pension proposal
✅ Bill C-211 disability-related changes
✅ Current OAS indexation for 2026
✅ What is already law vs. what is still only a proposal
✅ Important mistakes seniors should avoid before changing retirement plans
For July–September 2026, the maximum monthly OAS is $751.97 for ages 65–74 and $827.17 for ages 75+. The next scheduled quarterly adjustment is 1.4% for October–December 2026.
⚠️ Important: A bill being discussed in Parliament does NOT mean the benefit is already approved. Never make a major retirement or financial decision based solely on proposed legislation.
