Noir Ballades is a cycle of four improvised piano pieces inspired by the sea and the historic ramparts of Galle in southern Sri Lanka. Each ballade reflects a different emotional landscape shaped by the changing light and moods of the ocean. The music unfolds as a quiet psychological journey that moves from emergence through instability and crisis toward acceptance. The four ballades follow a natural arc:
Ballade I — First Light
The horizon at dawn. A moment of emergence and quiet awakening.
Ballade II — The Unquiet Sea
Afternoon winds disturb the surface of the water. Restlessness begins to grow.
Ballade III — Night Tempest
A storm breaks in darkness. Turbulence and emotional crisis reach their peak.
Ballade IV — The Returning Sun
Morning returns to the ramparts. After the storm, the sea grows calm again.
Recorded as spontaneous piano improvisations, the pieces are not strictly composed but allowed to evolve freely, guided by atmosphere, landscape, and memory.

Noir Ballade No. 1: First Light
(from Noir Ballades: Four Piano Ballades by the Sea)
Where the horizon begins to breathe. Noir Ballade No. 1 (First Light) opens the journey at daybreak on the ramparts above the sea. The night has passed, but the world is still quiet and uncertain. Gentle waves move below the stone walls while the first light appears along the horizon. The music unfolds slowly and reflectively, exploring fragile melodic ideas and spacious harmonies. Nothing is forced; the atmosphere remains contemplative, as if the pianist is simply watching the dawn arrive. This ballade represents emergence — the beginning of a psychological and musical journey that continues through instability, crisis, and ultimately acceptance.
Recorded as an improvised piano meditation inspired by the sea and the historic ramparts of Galle.
About the artist: Seneka Abeyratne, a retired Sri Lankan economist, has numerous creative interests, including writing (fiction/drama), photography, digital art, dancing (ballet/contemporary), choreography (classical-contemporary), and seeking beauty in dissonance via solo piano improvisations (noir classical/noir free jazz). He is a widely published author and winner of three prestigious local literary awards, including the Gratiaen Prize. His evocative, digitally altered images have been exhibited in Sri Lanka and France. Whether through word, image, or sound, his art remains an exploration of introspection — an unhurried dialogue between shadow and soul.
