Finally got around to finishing this mod so I can play in the dark with any color backlight I wish. I ended up programming a tiny pic12f629 microcontroller to read the button press, generate the RGB PWM, and save the current color to eeprom. For maximal display clarity I also biverted the lcd. Finally, to minimize permanent physical modification to the gameboy I installed a touch sensor to allow you to change the color by tapping the top right corner of the gameboy. Stay tuned for a full series of step by step how to videos as well as schematic and source code.
