As 2025 comes to an end, Pakistan’s economy stands at a historic crossroads. Government narratives highlight stability, falling inflation, rising foreign exchange reserves, and decisive reforms—especially in the power sector. Inflation has dropped from above 30% to near 4.5%, reserves have crossed $21 billion, and a massive circular debt burden has reportedly been resolved. On paper, this looks like a turnaround story.

However, economic reality is never one-dimensional. While the power sector reset is a structural breakthrough that can lower industrial costs and improve competitiveness, deeper cracks remain beneath the surface. The most serious concern is weak tax collection. FBR missed its targets by hundreds of billions, triggering the risk of IMF-mandated contingency measures such as mini-budgets, new taxes, or cuts in development spending. These steps can slow economic recovery just as momentum begins to build.

Markets reflect this contradiction. The Pakistan Stock Exchange delivered over 51% returns in rupee terms, signaling restored local confidence. Yet currency risk remains a critical threat for foreign investors. Commodity markets tell another story—gold prices have surged sharply, showing investor caution, while energy prices have fallen, offering Pakistan temporary relief.
