Mah Jongg! Modern Mahjong sharing Saturday Strategy: Rules on Hot Wall, Cold Wall & Defensive Play?

Описание: Saturday Strategy with Modern Mahjong. We received a question from a player regarding whether the National Mah Jongg League has rules regarding hot walls, cold walls and defensive play.
Both "Hot Walls" and "Cold Walls" are house rules regarding the dice wall which are the remaining tiles in East's wall after the roll of the dice to deal the tiles.

The official instruction book Mah Jongg Made Easy does not have rules that specifically mention hot walls or cold walls. There is a section on Defensive Play and another suggestion to play defensively, which we share in the video.

In games with Hot Walls, typically a player that discards a hot tile during the dice wall pays for the table.

Depending on house rules, a hot tile is one that is obvious the other player needs for mahjong based exposures and/or that the player cannot account for three other of the same tile. NOTE: This year there are MANY tiles that are singles that can be the winning tile! We discussed this in our Modern Mahjong Zoom Card Review with Barney Gallassio.

Some groups that play with hot walls also play that the money is NOT included in the player's pie and comes out of pocket.

In groups that play with a cold wall, typically the rule is that a player can only have mahjong when it is self-picked from the dice wall. You cannot claim a tile for mahjong in this type of game.

Players that enjoy playing this way appreciate that the game doesn't slow down when players are analyzing what tiles are safe to throw.

Critics do not appreciate that defensive play is removed from this final part of the game since "hot tiles" can be thrown without worry that they
will be called for mahjong.

So is defensive play required? What about throwing an obvious tile or to several exposures?

In Mah Jongg Made Easy there is a section on Defensive Playing (which we share a photo of in the video)and another suggestion to play defensively.

Mah Jongg Made Easy suggests defensive play and rejects the idea of a cold wall without mentioning one with this suggestion

We suggest that a player not throw a dangerous or obviously hot tile at any time or into a third or fourth exposure. Defensive play is recommended. Every pick and discard should be a challenge to the very last tile on the wall. This is part of the fun.
