Punjab toughens road rules with fines up to Rs15,000
Punjab has sharply increased traffic fines under a new law, targeting speeding, signal violations, overloading, and smoke-emitting vehicles. The ordinance, approved by the governor, introduces penalties up to Rs15,000 to improve road safety and enforce compliance. Officials hope the tougher fines will discourage reckless driving and reduce accidents across the province.

Under the new law, speeding fines have risen across all vehicle categories. Motorcycles now face Rs2,000 fines, motorcars Rs5,000, and larger vehicles face higher penalties reflecting their greater risk. Authorities emphasize that stricter fines will curb reckless driving, especially in busy urban centers where accidents are frequent.

Signal violations now carry heavy penalties. Three-wheelers will be fined Rs3,000, cars Rs5,000, 2,000cc vehicles Rs10,000, and vehicles over 2,000cc Rs15,000. Officials say these fines aim to reduce collisions and protect pedestrians at traffic intersections.

Overloading and environmental violations also face stricter fines. Three-wheelers and smaller vehicles now pay Rs3,000–5,000 for overloading, while trailers and large vehicles pay up to Rs15,000. Vehicles emitting excessive smoke face penalties from Rs2,000 for motorcycles to Rs15,000 for large transport vehicles. Authorities expect these measures to reduce pollution and protect public health.

The ordinance represents one of Punjab’s largest traffic fine revisions in recent years. Officials believe higher fines will promote compliance, improve road safety, and support ongoing environmental initiatives. Citizens are urged to follow traffic rules and avoid penalties, ensuring safer roads for everyone.
