Jacob’s project attempts to explain the white Evangelical support Donald Trump received during the 2016 election, as well as the steadfast support he has retained since the election. He combines social science and theology to make the case that white Evangelicals support Trump due to social and economic issues, but that it is the theology of white Evangelicalism that motivates them to do so. Several people have sought to explain white Evangelicals through surveys that ask questions about society, culture, the economy, etc. Likewise, there have been countless theological critiques of white Evangelicalism. Jacob begins with the social science data, and then attempts to make sense of that data by finding theological reasons why white Evangelicals think, and vote, the way they do.
