On December 6, 1917, wartime traffic turned deadly in the Canadian port of Halifax. The French munitions ship SS Mont-Blanc, loaded with TNT and other explosives for the First World War, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo. Minutes later, Halifax was rocked by one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.
The blast leveled 2.5 km², killed nearly 2,000 people, injured over 9,000, and sent a tsunami crashing into the harbor. Windows shattered up to 80 kilometers away, marking one of the most devastating civilian disasters of WWI.
