Instagram Model Arrested for Boating Under the Influence (BUI) in Florida

Описание: Around 7:46 PM on September 23, 2023, Officers David Morgan, Emily Whitty, and Austin Gilmore with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were on water-based patrol in the IntraCoastal waterway (ICW) inside Jupiter Inlet. The officers observed a female operating a 2021 BRP personal watercraft (PWC) without navigational lights more than half an hour after sunset time (7:15 PM on that day), and they initiated a vessel stop to address these violations. After the officers made contact with the operator and asked for her documents, she was identified as 23-year-old Lauren Lila, an Instagram model.

When Officer Morgan made contact with Lauren, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed that her eyes were glassy and red. He asked Lauren if she had consumed alcohol, and she admitted to probably consuming two drinks. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Lauren was instructed to come on to their patrol boat and offered an opportunity to perform field sobriety exercises.

The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and Officer Morgan observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Finger to Nose test. During the Finger to nose test, Lauren moved her head more than 1 inch from the starting position and failed to use her fingertip or touch the tip of her nose on multiple occasions. The third field sobriety exercise was the Palm Pat test, and Lauren showed clues of rotated hands and not increasing speed. The final field sobriety exercise was the Hand Coordination test, and Lauren failed to perform the 3rd task or 4th task correctly, indicating a lack of coordination.

Based on her admission to consuming alcohol in the hours prior and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Morgan determined that Lauren was impaired and placed her under arrest for boating under the influence. After Lauren was placed under arrest, they transported her to the U-tiki fueling dock and walked her to their patrol truck. A search of the vessel yielded empty bottles of alcohol, which were photographed and documented as evidence. The vessel was towed by SeaTow and brought to their yard in Stuart, Florida. Lauren was transported without incident to the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center in Palm Beach, Florida.

At the jail, they read Lauren Florida’s implied consent warning at 9:13 PM, but she refused to submit breath samples for testing. She also refused to answer questions after her Miranda rights were read to her. Following this process, Lauren was booked into the jail at 10:38 PM. After a mandatory holding period, she was released on her own recognizance the next morning at 6:51 AM pending her court appearance. Lauren was issued the following citations: Boating under the influence, refusal to submit to blood/breath/urine test pursuant to FS 327.352, operating PWC at night, navigational lights-not present or operational, and no boater ID card
