STORYLINE:
The second International Pet Trade Fair opened in New Delhi on Friday , showing off a variety of animals along with pet products and services: imported food, shampoos, clothes, and fancy kennels.
It is India's only pet trade fair and the biggest in South Asia.
A boom in pet ownership is a signal of the increasing affluence of some sections of Indian society.
Owned mostly by the country's urban middle-class, Indian pets now have access to international luxury brands and expensive fashion accessories.
One pet owner at the show, Neha Duggal, itemised her shopping list:
"I like lot of things, lots of accessories like hats and caps, shoes, t-shirts especially, because in India it is very difficult to find."
But those with a smaller budget need not worry, there is a variety of economy dog and cat food on show too.
Dogs remain the most popular of all pets , though there is a wide selection of pets at the event.
Pets are seen as status symbols and those who have the money want the best for them - be it herbal shampoos and deodorants or designer pet-wear and collars or multi-vitamin tonics and supplements.
"The market is still developing though there is a lot of competition around and people are coming up with a lot of different designs and everything," said Ruchi Saxena, an importer of pet accessories.
According to the market research company Euromonitor International, the Indian pet foods market is growing 10-15 per cent annually, and sales of pet products have almost doubled in the past 10 years.
