The Prophecy Jesus Made That Was Never Fulfilled

This is one of the most important questions in the history of Christianity. And it comes directly from the words of Jesus himself.
Jesus made a prophecy. He was specific about it. He gave a deadline. He said the generation he was speaking to would not pass away before everything he described came to pass. He said some of those standing in front of him would not taste death before they saw the kingdom of God coming in power. He said from now on — speaking directly to the high priest at his trial — you will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.
That generation died two thousand years ago. And what Jesus described did not happen. At least not in the way he and his earliest followers expected.
I preached for 28 years. I preached about the return of Christ with genuine conviction. I preached about the signs of the times and the nearness of his coming. And in all those years I was taught — as virtually every preacher is taught — a series of strategies for explaining why the deadline had not been met. Why this generation did not mean what it appears to mean. Why soon and near and at hand somehow meant the opposite of what they say.
This video is the honest examination of what Jesus actually said. What the earliest Christians actually expected. What Paul believed about his own lifetime. What the book of Revelation promised about timing. What happened in 70 CE when Jerusalem fell. And how the church has managed the problem of the unfulfilled prophecy across two thousand years of theology.
You will encounter the preterist interpretation — that Jesus's prophecies were fulfilled in 70 CE. The delay theology of Augustine and the medieval church. The revolutionary scholarship of Johannes Weiss and Albert Schweitzer who argued that Jesus was a genuine apocalyptic prophet who expected the end within his own generation. The sophisticated responses of N.T. Wright and C.H. Dodd. The dispensationalist system that inserted a two-thousand-year parenthesis into the prophetic timetable. And the honest historical assessment of what the texts actually say and what actually happened.
This is not an attack on Jesus or on Christian faith. It is what serious historians and biblical scholars — Christian and non-Christian alike — have been discussing for over a century in academic journals and seminary classrooms. It is the conversation that has almost never made it from those classrooms to the people in the pews who deserve to know it.
The texts are what they are. The history is what it is. And you deserve the complete picture.
💬 What do you do with the this generation language? Has the problem of the delay ever troubled your faith? Leave your honest response below — your story might be exactly what someone else needs to read tonight.
