Crabbing 101 - Tips for families and kids using hand traps and lines

Basket Traps are nice because they can also catch fish and eels ... they also don't take up too much space in the car if you stack them.

Box Traps are nice because they lock the crabs in during your pull up. They do take up space in your car unless you can get collapsible ones.

Don't underestimate handlines, they can be very effective, don't take up space and can work quickly. In some states you don't need a license for them.

With a little practice you can feel when the crab is on the handline... sometimes if you leave the line sit with some slack it will get tight once a crab is on.

Have a friend hold the net and scoop the crab while you pull up your handline... great tag team fun for kids!

Good bait to use: Fresh Chicken, Bunker Fish, Eel, Fish Scraps... you can also experiment... crabs eat a lot of different things!

Store crabs in a bushel basket, cooler or bucket.
Don't put them under water but keep them covered in cool seaweed or a wet towel.

Try to steam them as soon as possible. But you can store them for a few days in a cool area of your home if needed.

If you can't steam them right away, you can flush them with cool water every day to keep them fresh.

Measure crabs from point to point.
CHECK FOR LATEST REGULATIONS BEFORE YOU GO (a local bait shop is a good resource or the state online website)

Here is an example for NJ:
NJ blue hard crabs open all year- minimum size 4.5" - 1 bushel per day, no license needed for regular traps.

Sometimes you can't keep female crabs, especially if they have eggs (orange roe underneath them)

Kids can usually crab for free, sometimes adults may need to purchase a permit but they are usually not expensive.

Crab towel to wipe hands and/or cover crabs
Fresh Bait
Life Jackets for young kids
Hats and sunscreen
Chairs
Coolers and Drinks
Cooler/Bucket/Bushel Basket to store crabs
