In 2016, a college student from New Jersey wrote malware in his bedroom that took down Netflix, Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, and CNN — simultaneously. This is the forensic investigation that traced the largest DDoS botnet in history back to him.
The Mirai botnet infected 600,000 IoT devices — cameras, routers, baby monitors — and used them to launch the most destructive cyberattack the world had ever seen. On October 21st 2016, it took down Dyn DNS and crippled the US East Coast internet for 11 hours.
In this episode, I break down exactly how Mirai was built, how it spread to over 150 countries, and — the part no other channel covers — how forensic investigators traced it back. Log by log. IP by IP. Gaming handle by gaming handle.
