"Small Altars": A book that bends time and fragments narrative.
In Small Altars, Justin Gardiner delves into the world of comic books and superheroes as a means for coming to terms with the many struggles of his brother’s life, as well as his untimely death, offering a lyric and honest portrayal of the tolls of mental illness, the redemptive powers of art and familial love, and the complex workings of grief.
Justin Gardiner is the author three books—the long-form lyric essay Small Altars, winner of a Faulkner-Wisdom Nonfiction Book Award and published by Tupelo Press in 2024; Beneath the Shadow: Legacy and Longing in the Antarctic, published as part of the Crux Literary Nonfiction Series by the University of Georgia Press; and the poetry collection Naming the Lifeboat from Main Street Rag. In 2012-13, Justin served as the Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Fellow, living for a year at an off-grid homestead in the middle of the Rogue River Wilderness in southern Oregon. He is a graduate of Warren Wilson’s MFA Program for Writers, where he was awarded both the Larry Levis Post-Graduate Stipend and the Joan Beebe Teaching Fellowship. His essays and poems have appeared in journals that include The Missouri Review, Blackbird, Quarterly West, Zone 3, and Catamaran. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Auburn University and serves as the nonfiction editor of The Southern Humanities Review.
Christine Hale is the author of a novel, BASIL'S DREAM, and a memoir, A PIECE OF SKY, A GRAIN OF RICE. Her short fiction and CNF pieces have appeared in numerous journals, including ARTS & LETTERS, THE SUN, STILL, HIPPOCAMPUS, and PRIME NUMBER. A retired teacher and editor, she has been faculty at Warren Wilson College, the University of Tampa, the Great Smokies Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and the Antioch University - Los Angeles MFA Program. She received her MFA from the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers.
