The April War or Operation 25 was a German‑led Axis invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia that began on 6 April 1941 after a pro‑Axis government was toppled by a coup on 27 March. Hitler issued Führer Directive No. 25 and the campaign opened with heavy Luftwaffe bombing of Belgrade and strikes on the Royal Yugoslav Air Force, while German ground forces advanced from Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and the Ostmark. Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria joined the assault, Italian ground operations intensified on 11 April, meeting only limited resistance in many areas. Weak training, poor equipment, political divisions and rapid German air‑ground coordination caused the Yugoslav army to collapse quickly. An armistice based on unconditional surrender was signed on 17 April and took effect on 18 April. Yugoslavia was then occupied and partitioned by the Axis; Germany, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria and Albania annexed or controlled large parts, and the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was established.
