I’ve been working on some Bowie guitar parts for a project this past week involving materials from 1974 - 1976. In particular, the groove oriented guitar works laid down by Carlos Alomar.
Of the post Ziggy period, Bowie would work with brilliant lead guitarists by the likes of Earl Slick, Stacy Heydon, Robert Fripp, Ricky Gardnier and Adrian Belew. Their works, of course, would give that needed sweetening and has always been noted. It’s, however, Alomar along with bassist George Murray and drummer Dennis Davis (affectionately known as the DAM trio) that would lay down the solid groove foundation of David’s most influential works from 1975 - 1980.
My appreciation of Alomar’s works led me down a rabbit hole of learning other Bowie guitar parts from the period. One of them in particular being TVC15 from 1976’s Station To Station.
It was very frantic times for Bowie and the music represents that very well. Not just in the songs but with the guitar works revealing as much. You have 3 dichotomous styles of guitar playing going on all at once: Alomar’s rhythm guitar on the left speaker, Slick counterpoint rhythm and leads on the right and Bowie’s primitive and esoteric guitar filing out the ambience all throughout.
This was a fun one to learn and record.
Recorded with Ronno Bolan (2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard Raw Power series), Fender BassBreaker 15 amp, Outlaw Effects Cactus Juice and Deputy Marshal pedals, Nu-x Monterey Vibe pedal.
