Robert Christgau: "House Is Rockin'" keeps on boogieing
Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas. So was Mark Benno, he of Leon Russell's Asylum Choir. Blues composer, vocalist, guitarist and drummer Doyle Bramhall was from, that's right, Big D. In the '70s Doyle formed the Nightcrawlers with Benno and Vaughan, who was 20 at the time.
Bramhall had a gravelly vocal style that influenced Stevie Ray, and he began writing songs for him. This would continue after the Nightcrawlers split. Thus we have Bramhall - Vaughan as composers of The House is Rockin'. Keep on boogieing.
This is the opening track on "In Step", the 4th, final
and arguably best Vaughan/Double Trouble album.
