Описание: n recent videos, we explored the differences between many of the vowel sounds of American English. We have spent a lot of time learning how to distinguish between vowel sounds that are easy to mix up.

But there are a few remaining vowel sounds that we need to work on.

Our vowel sound for today is written a few different ways in IPA. You don’t need to worry too much about that for now.

For the purposes of today’s lesson, we will say it is this:

/aɪ/

This vowel sound goes with a few different English spelling patterns – y, ie, or igh.

Let’s practice with the vowel sound by doing a quiz. I will say a sentence. Count how many times you hear the /aɪ/ vowel sound.

Why is the price so high?

[INCLUDE PAUSE FOR VIEWERS TO THINK]

Listen again:

Why is the price so high?

The /aɪ/ vowel sound appeared 3 times in the sentence.

You heard it in these words:

Why

price

high

That’s all for today! In future videos, we will do more fun games that explore the sounds of American English.
