To begin, Big Canoe is a private gated community. You can only get in if someone inside says you can come. Luckily my friend has family that lives there so we were able to fish the waters. You do need to pay a daily fee at the marina even if you bring your own boat. I believe you can also rent boats from them if you would like.
This was my first time successfully hooking up with trout. I'm not sure this is your typical trout fishing style, as we caught them mostly on bass lures. Small spoons, lipless crank baits, tail spinners, and vibrating jigs were the winning lures. Someone even caught an 8lb trout that morning!
We also caught several bass. According to a few locals I spoke with and my friend, a 2lb bass is pretty big. I believe the lake record is in the double digits.
My theory on the small bass population is that they compete with the stocked trout for food. The trout all start at 1lb minim when stocked, so they have an advantage over small bass. The trout eat up the forage and its hard for the next generation of bass to get of any significant size. The ones that do though, I'm sure eat plenty of trout.
