Ondra Poygah is situated in Gulmit in Gilgit Baltistan. Ondra is the name of an ancient fort, whereas Poygah means stairs. It is essentially a stair (steps towards Ondra Fort) that leads from a historical Gulmit polo ground to the site of an ancient Ondra hilltop fort.
The total number of stairs is 1655, the elevation is 1562, and the trek route is 1.3 km long. It was built in 60 days during the harsh winter seasons of 2020 and 2021.
The people of Hunza are such cooperative residents, and they are actively participating in the betterment of the entire community. When we talk about Ondra Poygah, this initiative was taken by the community of Gulmit village.The original name for this location was Ondra Fort, and the fort was completely destroyed due to unforeseen circumstances a long time ago. ’ The community volunteers worked independently and eagerly to construct these stairs. This project aimed to promote the archaeological heritage of upper Hunza because there used to be a famous fort. They furthermore wanted to promote adventure tourism and ecotourism in this beautiful area by linking Gulmit village to the Ondra Fort by building stairs. This highest and longest trek simply provides a unique 360-degree view of the lovely Gulmit village. From this spot, the mighty cones of Passu, Sheshper Peak, Gulmit Tower, Ghulkin Village, and Attabad Lake are clearly seen.
